CONTRUCTION ROLLERS

Armored vehicle for protection

We source a full range of new and good used rollers, which are used for compacting materials such as soil, gravel, and asphalt. Models are generally categorized by their compaction mechanism and drum type.

Common Types of Construction Rollers

The primary classification for construction rollers is based on their drum configuration and operational mechanism:

Smooth Wheeled (Static) Rollers: These rollers rely solely on their heavy weight to compact surfaces, providing a smooth finish.

Models: Available as single-drum and tandem (double-drum) configurations. The weight can often be increased by ballasting with water or sand.

Best For: Asphalt, sand, gravel, and crushed stone in top layers, where a flat, even surface is needed.

Vibratory Rollers: These combine static weight with a dynamic vibrating component (generated by an eccentric shaft) to achieve higher compaction density by breaking up air
voids in materials.

Models: Available in single-drum (for soil) and tandem/double-drum (for asphalt) configurations.

Best For: Granular materials (sand, gravel, crushed rock) and general soil compaction.

Pneumatic Tyred Rollers: These rollers use a series of rubber tires (usually in two tandem axles) instead of steel drums. The flexible tires provide a kneading action and uniform
pressure distribution.

Models: The air pressure in the tires is often adjustable to meet specific project requirements.

Best For: Asphalt surfaces (for finishing and sealing), and cohesive/mixed soils in subgrade and base layers.

Sheepsfoot/Padfoot Rollers: The drums on these rollers have protruding rectangular feet or lugs that penetrate deep into the soil.

Models: Can be static or vibratory and are available in towed or self-propelled versions.

Best For: Fine-grained, cohesive soils like heavy clay and silty clays, often used in dam and embankment construction.

Grid Rollers: These feature a heavy steel drum with a grid pattern.

Best For: Well-graded coarse soils and weathered rocks, providing high contact pressure to break down large clumps of material.
